Windows Mobile Treo smartphone seems to be frozen, sluggish or slow to respond
When your smartphone appears to be bogged down and sluggish, here are some suggestions for improving its performance:
Is one of your applications running slowly or are some functions unavailable?
Windows Mobile 5.0 tries to recover from application errors by continuing to run the application where possible. This recovery method is not always successful. You may find that core functions of the application work but extended functions fail to launch or do nothing.
The solution is to stop the application and re-start it.
1. Press and hold OK .
2. The Running Programs List appears. Highlight one application, then select Stop. Or, select Stop All.
3. Still didn't work? Try performing a soft reset. Sometimes running applications will start back up after you stop them (more info).
Have you recently installed a third-party application?
Sometimes, third party applications can be the source of errors, freezing or sluggish performance. First, make sure the application you just installed is compatible with the Treo 750, 700w or Tre 700wx smartphone. Then try our troubleshooting tips: see Knowledge Library article 41603.
Have you installed older Today plug-ins?
Today screen plug-ins allow you to customize the Today screen on your smartphone. Today plug-ins written for previous versions of Windows CE or Pocket PC may cause sluggish behavior. The plug-in architecture for Windows Mobile 5.0 has been updated. Some older plug-ins will install and run as expected but the slower performance may impact device responsiveness. Seek Windows Mobile 5.0-compatible versions of your favorite Today plug-ins to get optimal performance.
Are you running too many applications at once?
Windows Mobile 5.0 applications continue to run when you launch another application. Using the OK button (or X symbol in the corner) only minimizes the application; it does not stop the application from running.
Your smartphone is designed to manage memory as you launch more and more applications. While there is no practical limit on the number of applications that can be running in the background, performance will suffer eventually. Close unused applications manually as a routine house-keeping operation. Here's how:
1. Press and hold http://www.palm.com/us/images/support/kb/articles/BTN_ok.gifOK .
2. The Running Programs List appears. Highlight one application, then select Stop. Or, select Stop All.

Are you using the Voice Command feature?
Voice Command, which lets you direct actions on your smartphone using voice recognition software, takes up a lot of memory. This can cause your device to run slowly or freeze. Try turning off Voice Command. Here's how:
1. Press Starthttp://www.palm.com/us/images/support/kb/articles/BTN_start.gif and select Settings.
2. Select Voice Command.
3. Uncheck the box for Enabled, then presshttp://www.palm.com/us/images/support/kb/articles/BTN_ok.gif OK .
Does your smartphone lock up and become unresponsive to a soft reset?
This is a rare scenario caused by installing software that replaces a basic system driver required by the Windows Mobile operating system. Palm has identified application classes which attempt to modify basic drivers and which are incompatible with Treo 700w/wx:
* Applications which attempt to change the screen resolution
* Some older audio recording applications
If a soft reset does not restore control of your smartphone, a hard reset will be required to recover from applications which cause a system lock-up. Do not re-install the application which caused the issue.
