Ok, hope this is the right forum for this. Basically looking for some opinions from our sages.
Just picked up my Mogul today, has 3.35 on it. Should I go ahead and upgrade to 3.56 right off, or just wait until one of the chefs cooks up a new rom based on it?

i would wait for a custom rom because i have heard mixed opinions on the rom itself..... you could always unlock and go custom with wm 6.1 like with the kaos **** sprint take 2 rom.

I was kinda leaning that direction, but wasn't quite sure if there was anything in the new rom (Sprint TV or whatnot) that might be worth upgrading or waiting for a custom version for.
Guess I need to teach myself how to do the bootscreens as well. Knowing my luck, I'd have to restart on a client site and have someone looking at their consultant's phone flipping them off. :)
Thanks for the input Dash!

I ended up dropping Kaos' rom on there to play with (gotta love it, never used ppc and I put a custom rom on in the first 2 hours) for now. So far so good (still gotta work on the bootscreens to keep me out of trouble), it's pretty clean, so I'm trying to get the pieces I want installed.
kaos rom is pretty good. i ran it for a while b4 i got touch. also if u hvae to soft reset your phone just turn it upside down or something so the person doesnt see it.

I am kinda in the same boat...I have the current 3.35 loaded...and I have done a few little things to it but nothing extravagant...I am wondering about the whole loading a custom ROM v. loading the new one coming out that is from sprint...I know custom seems like the way to go...but I am a total chicken sh*t when it comes to this stuff...and would like to have someone explain it to me like I am a 2 year old...so that I can understand it and feel a bit more comfortable about it....
sorry to sound like a moron...but after being out of the computer industry for 7 years...and just getting back into this stuff...I am feeling rather stupid....
thanks in advance for the help!!!!

so if I flash to a ROM....and I do not like it...I can hard reset...does that take me back to the beginning...or back to the raw version of the ROM i installed?? I am a bit confused on it....
I guess what I am asking...is if I put Kaos on there....and I do not like it for whatever reason....how do I get back to the original set up of the phone???? is that always stored as the hard reset????
thanks

the hard reset reverts your current rom to its defauls state (stock) but you still have the same rom
to get your old rom back you must flash back to the rom of your choice

No, hard resetting is going to take you back to the base of whatever rom is loaded. So if you loaded Kaos' rom, then hard resetting would take it back to the way that rom was when you first loaded it. To go back to an official rom, you'd have to re-lock your phone, then flash the official rom back. Check Dash's sig for a guide on flashing and how to go between official and non-official stuff.

Trust me, I can sympathize. I was sitting there jonesing to put a new rom on the second I got the thing (mostly cuz I wanted GPS and REV A), but there was so much reading to cover, and I was nervous as hell.
Finally bit the bullet and just did it. Figured these things are pretty hard to truly brick, so I just followed the instructions as closely as possible, bit my nails for a bit, and 30 minutes later was up and running on Kaos' Take 2 rom. Since that time, I've tried a couple different, ran with Take 3 for a while (which is a nearly perfect rom) and now started cooking my own just to see if I could do it.

Yes (imho) Take 3 is the one to go with. Clean and solid, and easy to load the apps you want to customize the phone with.
And yes, it does get easier, especially when you start to tweak it out a bit. I'm currently running a combination of Ultimate Launcher and HTC Home and love it.

So, in order to load a custom rom..I must uinlock the phone....once unlocked...I load the ROM....and then I have to reset the phone information?? i.e. enter the msid numbers and such???
Also, I would like to get my contacts backed up to some type of spreadsheet....so I can make the necessary changes to it....then on the fresh install....reload it into the phone....and THEN push it onto my hotmail account so it is all the same....man this activesync....(vista version).....is killing me as well! lol

just jump in there and start with something!! You'll get the hang of it, and theres also plenty of quality grade A help here on the site. I'm sure the staff or a Vet will bail you out with quick responses if you get stuck. Worked for me. Best help comes when you're in the act, preliminary help is your reading.

I appreciate the vote of confidence....I really do....I am uhhh....trying to get up the courage....my main concern is the contact information that I can not afford to lose....that is where I am struggling right now....if I could get the sync crap to work worth a damn I would feel more at peace....however, everytime I do it, it makes a mess....hence the new thread I made....hoping someone has a magical answer....once I have that golden, then I will be more apt to play....really would like to upgrade the ROM though....

Just make sure you have all the tools you need assembled.
If you haven't already, it's a good idea to jot down your MSID (usually your phone number).
You've got the steps basically right. Unlock the phone (flash the bootloader). Once there, you flash the new radio. Once it finishes, you flash the new rom.
Remember, in your case you're going to a new radio version as well, so you need to flash that before the rom.
And remember, if you see the proverbial rainbow screen, don't panic. The phone is not bricked, just waiting to happily accept a new rom.
In the case of Take 3, the Radio is found in the second post. The file will be named TITAIMG.NBH. You'll have to rename it to the ruu_signed (can't remember the name off the top of my head) and put it in the RUU folder unless you have a spare memory card (flashing is MUCH faster if you do).
Honestly, it's scary the first time, but once you're done you'll wonder what all the fuss was about.

Can one of the guru's look this over to make sure I didn't put anything wrong down? Trying to make a Cliff's Notes version of the guide, adjusted for using memory card to flash.
If you've got the cards, I'd definately recommend that approach. Use 2 of them. Format to Fat 32. On the first one, download the radio rom from the second post in the Take 3 thread.
http://rapidshare.com/files/127725282/TITAIMG.NBH
Put this on the first memory card.
Next, download the ROM you want (either stripped or loaded) from the first post in the thread. Loaded here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/127987181/RUU_signed.nbh
Rename this file to TITAIMG.NBH and put it on the second memory card.
Next, if you haven't already, download the unlocker.
https://www.wckediden.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=14189&d=1213907804
First thing you do is run the unlocker executable. This will extract some files to the drive (specify folder) and start a command prompt. When it's ready, it will tell you to hook up the phone and press any key to continue. Just follow the instructions, and pay attention when it tells you to disconnect and reconnect the phone. It'll launch the Rom Update Utility (RUU) and you just follow the instructions (which basically means click next a few times). Since you're flashing a new rom at this time, you don't have to worry about the ExitBL process. (it'll tell you to close window if you're flashing a new rom).
Next, pop the radio rom sd card in, hold down power and camera and hit the reset button. It'll pop up and tell you to press a key on the keyboard to flash. It'll flash and be done in a few moments.
Once it says success, pop that card out, pop the main rom card in, and do it again.
You're done.
