i have a ext. hardrive it does not seem to be working on my laptop. it recognizes that something is pluged in the laptop but it wont show up under my comp

xp or viista and what service pack? try different usb ports? firewire or usb 2.0?

its called fantom drive ive been using it for about a year i have vista on my laptop

see i dont use vista..but if you can go to your device driver under usb check to see if there's a exclamation.If it is then if that hd came with a driver software try to install it.Normally it'll pick it up and it's not needed bit you're on vista.

If it had the exclamation mark I would disconnect the HD, uninstall the usb drive, restart your laptop, let it recognize/install the usb drive, and then plug your HD again, hopefully it will recognize it as a new addition.

Also, you said it recognizes something is plugged in. What does it say? Unkown USB device or something like that?
