The reason why AT&T wont support MMS with the iPhone until “late Summer”, tethering info. from Boy Genius...

We were just told the real reason why AT&T wont be supporting MMS on the iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G S at launch, and youre going to laugh… Technically it will work right away our ninja tells us. The are no extra plans or higher fees weve just learned (the unlimited $20 package covers unlimited SMS and MMS), and the reason its not good to go right away is because AT&T has to manually remove all the “Opt Out MMS codes” on each account. Basically, if we were to summarize this, and were going out a little bit of a limb, remove the Opt Out MMS code, and MMS will work with the final OS 3.0 build right away. Who wants to try it with the GM 3.0 build just released?

Weve also just heard that tethering will be 100% locked out at launch, but AT&Ts in the process of putting together a $70/mo unlimited data and tethering plan. SMS and MMS will not be included in that plan, were told.

This is awesome for me because I have my feature listed as messaging on my account...what boy genius refers to as my att associate friends have told me is that when a cell phone sales associate sells an iphone 3g there are a list of add on features as there are with any carrier...but with the iphone 3g they will see a list of text messaging features say actually look something like this below...

-iphone 200 text
-iphone 1500 text
-iphone unlimited text

now for the all other handsets on the att network a rep. would see a messaging list that would look something like this below...

-200 messaging
-1500 messaging
-unlimited messaging

now the first list by wording indicates just text as an available feature and when you look on an att bill with any of those feature you will see mms opt out feature as well...but the second list of features indicates messaging which is all inclusive messaging which included text, picture, and videe messaging...now both lists are same prices for the equal amounted tiers...but for some reason att decided to make a separate list which was not really necessary and only gives them this headache off removing all mms opt out codes and switching back to messaging plans for everyone...if they never did this at all in the first place and left it messaging for all iphoners than there would have been no difference...but me being the smart person as I am had a friend activate my device and I instructed him to give me the messaging feature option which allowed me to send mms with my "special," iphone and gave me no limits there if apple and att were to change their mind about mms for iphone like they have just done...well I will see if I can send mms once the software update comes out next wednesday...I will also most likely be getting my hands on the new iPhone 3GS when it comes out through an exchange that I have the inside deal on!
