set up active sync to sync with google. i'm using it for all my contacts/email/ and calender stuff.
Google Sync : Set Up Your Windows Mobile Phone - Mobile Help (http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138636&topic=14299)
after syncing you can back up your contacts with selboriyorkerbackup or pim backup, etc.

you have to set up the phone first. you have to tap on "set up your device to sync with it" and set it up then sync.

or you can do it this way very easy....
1. go into your gmail account
2. click on contacts tab on right
3. when contact load on the upper right of the shaded area you will see import, export and print
4. click on export
5. choose contacts only or email addresses too
6. download as outlook csv file.
7. now open up microsoft outlook and go to file import and import that file that you downloaded.
8. now sync your phone by setting up your device through activesync or mobile device center and you are done. good way to always have a backup copy on your external or usb drive as well...
hope this helps.

just as a second back up of your contacts i would use pim backup, its easy to use and it never hurts to have another backup of contacts....
