Rough First Attempt
 

Hey guys,

I've been around here for a while but I've never actually attempted to put anything on my phone. Today, I decided to try and I'm haven problems. I tried to put a boot screen on my HTC Touch first. I was on the custom boot screen page and I tried 2 different ones, the skull boot and the one with the chalkboard and the teacher. I have them on my phone but I don't know what to do past this point.

I've read the Noob Guide and I'm still confused. Can someone please give me an overview of what I need to do in this situation?

I'm sorry, I know I'm a noob but I really love what ya'll are doing here and I just want to get in on the cool stuff.

So what your saying is your trying to change the bootscreen to a different one?

You have to rename the image to welcomehead.96.png and using resco file explorer or total commander copy the file into your windows directory and choose to overwrite. The stock file explorer won't let you overwrite stuff in your windows folder

Okay. I think my problem is that I don't know how to get the files onto the phone so that I can use them. I am trying to get a movie and the Swcked keyboard on my phone as well. I'm downloading the files to my PC and then I get stuck. I have Winzip and Winrar but I don't know what to do with them. What else do I need to get everything working?

I'm sorry for being such a moron but I didn't really get this information out of the Noob Guide...

I renamed the file in the File Explorer so now I need Resco File Explorer to finish this off right?

So now, I'm back to the "How do I get programs on my phone?" situation. It seems like once I get this down pat I'll be able to function on this site...

I feel like an idiot right now but I really do appreciate the help.

I have the Resco File Explorer on my Touch. So, now, what do I do to set the boot screen as my default? I have the file in the Resco File Explorer and it is renamed with the png...

Is my Windows Directory the Folder labeled Windows with all the subfolders?

If so, I have the file in this folder. It is called welcomehead.96.png.rar. It isn't in any of the subfolders.

Just thought this would help in the problem solving.

basically you just drag the cab file over to your device and then use your device's file explorer to navigate where you put the cab, click on the cab and it will install... yes you will need resco file explorer and you need to unrar the image so the name should be welcomhead.96.png not welcomhead.96.png.rar and then using resco, click and hold on the file and choose copy to and when the list pops up just click the windows folder. When it asks if you want to overwrite the file choose yes and you will have the new boot screen

I've done all that but it doesn't ask if I want to overwrite the file. It just puts the new file in the folder, no questions asked...I unrared the file so now I'm just using an image file....

hmm...maybe the welcomhead has a different number for the touch...you can use resco and open up the windows folder and look for the file welcomhead.xx.png and see what number that has and rename your file accordingly...also to see the file you have to go to options and choose to unhide all of the file types.

its becasue you arent following the steps that were given to you... you have to overwrite with resco file explorer or overwrite with total commander.

Actually, I don't think that is the problem. I think the problem is that I am working with the wrong types of files.

Here are my observations:

- The stock Windows Welcomehead does not show up in Resco, but it does show up in the stock File Explorer.

- When I rename the files, I am not completely renaming them. I put welcomehead.96.png but it leaves off the ending. When I go to properties, it is welcomehead.96.png.bmp or welcomehead.96.png.jpg, which is why I am not prompted to overwrite...

How can I fix this?

You need to actually convert the image using something like paintshop or photoshop. Just open it, then save as, and choose png as file type.

Okay, well that got me somewhere but I ran into another brick wall...

I got the prompt to overwrite since it already existed when I renamed the file welcomehead.96 (since this is the name of the stock boot up screen). I clicked yes and I was about ready to celebrate when I got an error saying "Action Failed: Cannot rename the welcomehead_96.png'. Access Denied."

Any ideas?

I think I got it. I just changed the file name on my PC and then converted it to the touch. I'm restarting right now to check...

Sounds like you were using regular file explorer. Gotta use total commander or resco

Yeah that worked. Unfortunately, the image wasn't the whole screen size. It's like a quarter inch off on the right and the bottom. Is there any way I can center it up or did I do something wrong?

Image has to be 240 width x 320 height. Youll have to resize it and do it again.

That worked. Looks sweet. Thanks superman and everyone else who helped out on this one. I learned alot so hopefully I won't be such a noob anymore...
