Set "Battery Icon" to "Hide" and "Date and Time" to "Show nothing" (as before), reset the phone and it looks ok.

Perhaps my previous manual tweaks jacked it up for the real fix.

Although when I tap the Quick menu icon the black overlay STILL does appears as long as the application drop down shows but then goes away when it closes.

I can live with that as long as thats the only time it appears.
