Actually... it doesnt require a hard reset...just a soft one.... and its pretty easy to install and figure out... especially if you get m2dc(manilla 2d customizer) then you can take out whatever widgits and do a helluva lot of tweaking you wanted... but do, I think, you overthinking it. Of coarse like D?|sh and tweety said you cold always just flash to a rom that has it built in, (but wouldn't that be the same as your concerns about hard resetting?)
