At a guess me....I was just thinking that if you locked the device then it easier to just tap the screen to wake it up rather that press the power button, this is very simlar to samsungs etc

yeah but it would be losing mad power throughout the day since it would be coming on in your pocket or holster and guarnteed picking up calls on top of that.
