esn is the numbers on the phone that allows them to place service on it. if the numbers are dirty than the phone cant be activated.... this can be because of unpaid account balance, claimed lost, claimed stolen, etc. you just get the numbers from them and than call sprint and tell them that you want to make sure that the phones numbers that you are planning on buying are clean and than just give the digits to them and they will tell you within minutes.
