ok here we go crash course and you may want to read the noob guide since this was discussed by jew in his own words not mine.

CHAPTER 1 - unlocking your phone
unlocking your cdma phone is done to achieve the status of flashing a custom rom to your device. what this is doing is masking the stock bootloader and tricking it to thinking that the roms being flashed to the device are your providers made roms. (this is because they lock it down to only your providers roms that can be flashed) so basically all this is doing is making it so you can flash custom roms

CHAPTER 2- custom roms
basically think of it this way. your computer and your phone both run windows. for your pc you have vista and xp mainly now and soon to be windows 7. they are all called operating systems or os's. you can do the same with your phone..... so basically lets say your phones stock rom is xp and you want vista. you would get the so called vista rom and flash that to your phone..... so basically the rom is what you are working with windows version wise.....
