When I do not have it connected and do the install, when I then go and connect the phone WMDC does not open on it's own I have to do it manually. At that point it just show connecting for about a minute then shows a red X and the word error

When it is connected when I do the install it opens WMDC right away but it just sits on the splash screen for 10+ minutes. if I then go and manually open the program (while it's still stuck on the splash screen) it pops right up and shows me the same red X error.

There's no firewall up and I even uninstalled my anti-virus stuff.

I'll give the soft reboot a try though I have this feeling that it's more the PC side not doing something right as the phone tells me I've made a connection.

The USB to PC thing I changed was under the activesync thing in the USB to PC thing called "Enable advanced network functionality" this was something the phone help suggested.
i don't think its a pc problem. provided your firewall isn't blocking the connection and your usb ports work and you have WMDC installed then it's probably your phone

i would suggest you go ahead and hard reset
