I am not sure if there is a fix or you have to hard reset for a clean slate. I never use it for my contacts personally because i heard of these problems. I have just been syncing with outlook contacts and have never had a problem with multiple messages being sent.
I am not sure but i think i read over at XDA that sprite backup worked better but you may have to look into that to confirm.
I only ever backup my contacts with PIM , but if this is the problem adding or swapping for Sprite backup will be no big deal.
