Samsung is still the
biggest foldable smartphone brand globally, but it is
losing its sheen. Chinese rivals are launching foldable phones with
better specifications, thinner form factors, and lower prices.
The South Korean firm won't back down without a fight, though, as the
Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the
Galaxy Z Fold 7 will get important hardware upgrades, including bigger screens.
Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Z Fold 7 are getting bigger screens
According to display industry insider
Ross Young, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will have bigger screens than their predecessors. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 reportedly features a 6.5-inch cover screen and an 8-inch foldable screen, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition.
The Galaxy Z Flip 7 will reportedly sport a 6.85-inch foldable screen and a 4-inch cover screen. That is an upgrade compared to the Galaxy Z Flip 6's 6.7-inch foldable screen and a 3.4-inch cover screen.
These upgrades should offer Samsung much-needed space to put bigger batteries in the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the Galaxy Z Fold 7. More importantly, the bigger cover screen offers a regular slab-style phone feel and doesn't make you feel cramped.
On the Galaxy Z Flip 7, a 4-inch cover screen offers more screen real estate and a chance to use full-fledged apps without unfolding the phone. However, it remains to be seen if Samsung wants you to use full-fledged apps on the cover screen or wants to limit you to widgets.
These bigger screens, combined with potentially bigger batteries and the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, should make the phones more powerful and more enjoyable to use. The Snapdragon 8 Elite offers a huge performance and efficiency jump compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip used in current-generation foldable phones from Samsung.
