Rss Feed Samsung could earn billions by supplying HBM4 chips for Google’s TPU

Samsung makes some of the world's best semiconductor memory chips. Its most advanced memory chip yet is the sixth-generation high-bandwidth memory (HBM4), and it will be used in some of the world's fastest AI accelerators. Those chips are said to be used in Google's most powerful Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) next year.

According to a report from South Korea, Samsung's HBM4 chips have successfully passed Google's qualification tests. Those memory chips will be used in Google's seventh-generation TPU, which is called Ironwood. These Ironwood TPUs will be manufactured by Broadcom, and Broadcom Chairman and CEO Hock Tan reportedly visited South Korea last week to meet Samsung Device Solutions head, Yon Young-hyun, and to sign a HBM4 supply deal with the company.

Industry insiders claim that Hock Tan discussed HBM4 supply terms with Samsung and requested the supply through 2028. However, Samsung reportedly only confirmed HBM4 supply for 2026 and agreed to discuss further supply terms later. Samsung will also supply more fifth-generation HBM (HBM3E) chips for Google's current TPU (sixth-generation).

Overall, Samsung will reportedly supply three times more HBM chips for Google's TPU. Half of Samsung's HBM4 chips will be supplied to Broadcom, while the rest will be supplied to Nvidia for its Rubin GPU. The company has already sent its final HBM4 samples to Nvidia for quality approval and is expected to get the approval later this month.

Even though Samsung lost to Micron and SK Hynix in supplying HBM3E chips to Nvidia last year, the company has improved the performance of its HBM chips and increased the production capacity for those chips. Things are looking really good for Samsung, and it could earn billions by supplying its memory chips for AI data centres and servers.
