Samsung may still be in the running to produce Qualcomm?s new 2nm chip

Qualcomm is set to unveil its new flagship mobile chipsets later this month. It's expected to launch two models, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro.



Earlier reports had suggested that Qualcomm may get these chips made exclusively by TSMC, but the latest reports suggest that Samsung may still be in the running.

It's been several years since Qualcomm had its flagship chips manufactured by Samsung, as the Korean giant's foundry suffered from yield issues on advanced nodes. Samsung's 2nm process is faring better as it has already secured orders from major US companies. Yields are said to be around 55%, a commendable improvement, yet still below TSMC's 60-70% yields.



Samsung and Qualcomm are reportedly discussing various aspects of a deal that could see the latter's 2nm chips being made at Samsung Foundry. Discussions are said to revolve around specifications, pricing, and process optimization. The possibility that both TSMC and Samsung may be used to manufacture these chips is still believed to be active.



More clarity should emerge about where Qualcomm intends to get the new chips made at the company's Snapdragon Summit later this month, where the new chips will be unveiled. A recent report suggested that pricing remains a sticking point, as Samsung isn't willing to offer the discounts it has previously offered given the higher demand for its 2nm process.
