Reasons abound for security protocol surrounding cell phone records at the major carriers. Consumers just don't like hearing about privacy breaches. But as the presidential office moves into the wired age, for the first time a President-elect is a red flag going off in Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ)'s face.

A personal cell phone account owned by Barack Obama (but that has been inactive for several months) was confirmed to have been accessed by "several" of Verizon's employees -- all of whom have been placed on administrative paid leave pending an internal investigation into which did so for a good reason.

While it's easy to imagine the thrill that might accompany viewing the phone calls of the President-elect (how many minutes to that number in Chappaqua, New York in June?), it's also easy to imagine the potential damage that could arise from such illegal access, both to Obama (or any candidate) and to the trust the public places in its cell phone carriers. Verizon is right to have taken action and made the news public; but the company should have put more preventative measures in place to ensure its sensitive customers' data was secure.

its ignorant calling that ignorant. he asked a question; one that should be a valid one. Verizon is going to fire these people after they investigate and legal action will be taken by the government probably to set examples. I'de like to see obama's phone records to see what he is hiding :)

Maybe we should have been more concerned with the calls Bush had with the many companies he made deals with...ie; Enron, Exxon, Amoco, Bin Laden...etc Let's all worry about when Sprint and other carriers are going to show PPC/Smartphone owners some true love. so you're saying the way the country is run is above all of our pay grades? I agree with wanting to look into Bush's matters too, I am no republican; i want to know what these presidents are spending their time talking about. The president should have no privacy when it comes to calls no matter who he is! With more power should come less privacy. I dont care about pay i dont care about anything except power. If someone has that much power over one of the most powerful countries in the world...i dont want them to have any secrets. I give all my love to PPC / Smartphone owners whilst working at sprint :)

hahahaaha... thats funny!!! yeah politics is rediculess right now... i dont think it would be accurate to say that it is above our pay grade but rather that there is next to nothing we can do about it individually ... you say we vote so we are the ones who have the power, well thats debateable if you take the electoral college into account, but ill leave that alone... ill focus on who puts the people in front of us to vote for? well its the ones with enough money to finance the campaigns... corps who stand to benefit more individually from a specific friend with "power" than the average citizen! my buddy is just barely old enough to run for offices in this great land and he is a good guy, smart top of his class at a ivy league school but still down to earth and loyal... but can he run well technically yes but will he win? no because he is ass broke cuz of school lones and no one has ever heard of him and he couldn afford to campaign across the county let alone across the country. that being said yes the president is in public office so his records need to be in front of the public... it will help keep him honest... lets not be foolish enough to assume that we are going to get a perfect president anytime soon... all of us sucomb to pressure if there is enough of it... and there is plenty in the white house

wow i posted this to see people reaction on what those verizon employees have done. not to make remarks bout if he called bin laden for whatever reason... but i do respect amendment one and i believe everyone (U.S. LEGAL citizen) has their rights... execpt for flaming though...
