Can the Galaxy Ring go for a swim? Is it dust and water-resistant?
Samsung is among the few mobile manufacturers who care about dust and water resistance. For one, it was the first phone manufacturer to create a foldable device with an IP water-resistance rating.
But what about brand-new products, such as the Galaxy Ring? Does this wearable have an IP rating for dust and water resistance? Can you take it out for a swim? Here's all you need to know. Galaxy Ring dust and water resistance explained The Galaxy Ring has an IP68 (Ingress Protection) dust and water-resistance rating. The first number, 6, indicates that the Galaxy Ring is as dust-tight as it can get. 6 is the highest rating for dust resistance and it means that the Galaxy Ring should offer complete protection against dust (test duration of up to 8 hours based on airflow). More details after our hands-on video below… As far as water resistance goes, the Galaxy Ring gets an Ingress Protection rating of 8, which is very near the top. It's also 10ATM-rated, i.e., it gained a water-resistance rating of 100 meters according to the ISO22810 standard. More specifically, Samsung says it has conducted Galaxy Ring tests in 5% salt water and 4ppm chlorine water. The Ring got the IP68 rating based on the lab test conditions for submersion in up to 1.5 meters of freshwater for up to 30 minutes. Samsung's fine print states that the Galaxy Ring is not suitable for high-pressure water activities and diving. However, the Ring may be used “for shallow-water activities like swimming in a pool or ocean.,” with the caveat that, once exposed to seawater, it's recommended to rinse the Galaxy Ring in fresh water after use. As with any other IP-rated device, Samsung underlines that water resistance is not a permanent condition and its effectiveness can diminish over time. The post Can the Galaxy Ring go for a swim?
