Expect more confusion for the Galaxy S27’s Snapdragon chipset

The confusion surrounding Samsung's choice of chipset for next year's Galaxy S26 series has only just cleared up by some margin. Recent reporting suggests that the Galaxy S26 and S26+ will get the Exynos 2600 everywhere while the Galaxy S26 Ultra will use the Exynos in most markets and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in the US, Japan, and China.



What about 2027? Assuming Samsung doesn't go full Exynos for the lineup, there may be even more confusion, as Qualcomm is claimed to be developing to separate variants of its next flagship chip that may be called the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6.



This isn't the same as the “for Galaxy” Snapdragon variants



It's claimed that Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 6 chip will be launched in two variants, described as Standard and Pro. Both will reportedly be fabricated on TSMC's 2nm process. The GPU specifications will be different for the two variants, and only the Pro may have support for LPDDR6 RAM, and potentially higher performance.



This would mean, theoretically, that your run of the mill 2027 flagship phone will use the Standard variant of the chipset while the ultra premium flagships, from any manufacturer, will get the Pro variants. Nonetheless, it may prove to be confusing for the average customer who may be under the impression that all Snapdragon 8 Gen 6-powered devices deliver the same performance.



If Samsung intends to keep the same chipset split for the Galaxy S27 series, it remains to be seen if it will go for the Pro variant. Samsung typically gets a “for Galaxy” edition of Qualcomm's flagship chip which tends to be slightly overclocked, but the LPDDR6 support would place it out of that league.
