Thats because your phone only checks the tower every 5 seconds. Thats the default from sprint. You need your MSL to manually change it. Go here

Hit the thanks and the install button there. Obtain your MSL then change your SCI (slot cycle index) to 1 or 0(I have mine at 0) I believe you have to dial ##778# to get to your phones settings. If this helps, hit the thanks.
