Networking a PPC 6800 w/ file sharing
First off, I sincerly hope that I have posted in the correct spot. I also hope that I did not miss the information somewhere else. The site has taken some getting used to :) Its an awsome site and I do take the rules seriously.
The question: I have an HTC PPC6800 through Alltel. I would like to add this device to my network. I already have internet through wifi, that is not what I am talking about. I would like to sit at my desktop and access/write files on my PPC through the network. Idealy It would always just connect when I turn the wifi on and I would not need special software slowing down my PPC all the time. I should also note that all the computers on my network run Vista Ultimate. If anyone knows where the information is to do this or if anyone knows how to do this I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks in advance. |

Re: Networking a PPC 6800 w/ file sharing
I dont have a mogul to test anything with but it seems as though it would be as easy as typing in the location of your home computer in the file explorer. As long as you are on the same network as your pc you should be able to just go into file explorer and use the OPEN option do do something like \\nameofcomp\sharedfolder and it would open the folder in file explorer. Seems pretty simple so it might not work :P never really looked into just thinking of how windows like to network things. Hope it works. :)

Re: Networking a PPC 6800 w/ file sharing
I couldnt get that to work either. When I tried by both the computer name and then by the IP Address. It doesn't tell me that it will not work. It does nothing.
What I am thinking is this. In order to network a PC it is necessary to give the computer a name and then make sure it is joined to the same workgroup as the rest of the PCs. I have not been able to find an option on the PPC to give it a workgroup. This is why I can see it through my routers DHCP table and it recieves internet without a problem. However, without the ability to join the workgroup I cannot join the network to file share. I also notice that there is nothing in the PPC that refers to anything along the lines of browsing networks. I may be in a situation where I have to use a second hand program that I will have to run to access files on my pc, the question is, can I use that software to save from my pc to my PPC? I may have to stay tied up with a USB cable. I simply envisioned the ease of writing a document, clicking save, directing it to my phone, even if its in another room, and bam, ready to go, all without the use of cables, or dealing with connection times. Any other comments or suggested would be greatly appreciated. This is one of those moments when I would like someoone to come and tell me how wrong I am. :) I wonder if this is going to be something available in windows mobile 6.1? Then I would only have to wait the several months required for Alltel to release it. Last edited by frizzlediam; 04-28-2008 at 02:26 PM. Reason: After thought |

Re: Networking a PPC 6800 w/ file sharing
From what i have read I only see two general directions you can go for accessing files via wifi. One of which would be to attempt to get an activesync server running on your computer than go to the server tab on activesync on your phone and type in your computers IP. This would require you to open a port on your network :/ The other option that I would present to you is you could use a 3rd party application ( you said you would rather not ) there are a few FTP applications for the pocketpc / windows mobile OS's the one that i use a lot is called Mocha FTP, i believe its on this site, if not ill post it up later. Basically it just sets your phone up as an FTP server that you can access from your desktop PC, it allows you to save and open files from the phone. If you wanted to go the reverse direction and access your PC's files from your phone you could set up an FTP server on your computer and FTP into it from your phone ( this would also require you to open a port ) But that is all i have found for now, it would be easier to help you if i had a mogul but as i said previously i dont have one :P Maybe when im at work tonight i will take a look at it and see if there is anything that i have missed. Hope this helps...

Re: Networking a PPC 6800 w/ file sharing
Those are some good ideas and I appreciate how much effort you are putting into to helping me figure this out. Like you, opening ports doesn't really sound appealing to me and even if I did get that all set up, it still wouldnt be quite the vision I was looking for. After considering risk and work for reward, it is still more efficient just to plug in the USB cable lol.
Now, I really do not want to sound like the demanding person that just cannot be satisfied but I think that this might be a moment where I do have to realize that a PPC is just not quite as robust as a PC...not yet anyway. A guy I work had the courage to flash his Sprint mogul with a WM6.1 ROM. I witnessed him actually use remote desktop to connect to a PC at work as well as some other impressive features. It was actually pretty cool and my understanding is it was built into the ROM. My point is, if it can do that, maybe it will be able to do what I want, I will ask him tonight while I am at work. If this is the case I will just have to have patience until Alltel releases their version of the ROM. Truth be known, I am not the most knowlegeble about the PPC scene as of yet. If I find out anything useful I will post it here for anyone else who is curious about this topic. Again, thankyou for your help, I truly appreciate it. UPDATE: I installed the 6.1 Kaos Rom. It doesn't seem to have anything for regular networking, however, it does have an option to join a domain and share that domains resources. I do not currently have the time to learn how to set up a domain and see how it all works but if there is someone else interested in this same subject matter, that is definately the direction I would go in. I will do more to learn about this in a few weeks when college lets out. If there is another post here that explains all of that I am sorry I missed it and would love to see it :) Last edited by frizzlediam; 04-30-2008 at 12:10 AM. |

Re: Networking a PPC 6800 w/ file sharing
Not trying to rain on your parade, but why would you want to read and write files through the network when all of this can be done with active sync over usb or bluetooth...seems like a huge waste of time and effort.
