Rss Feed Galaxy S20 users may want to pass the torch to the Galaxy S25 right away

There's something commendable about getting the most mileage out of a phone you like, but nothing lasts forever. Even if you hold on to a phone until the last firmware update, it can be risky to push beyond that point and use an unsupported device that no longer receives security patches.

That's where the Galaxy S20 landed earlier this year after five years of support. The phone no longer receives updates, but on the bright side, this might be the perfect time to look for an upgrade. And the Galaxy S25 is totally worth it. Here's why.

Needless to say, the Galaxy S25 is the best 2025 Samsung (non-foldable) phone with a relatively compact design. But why exactly would it make perfect sense to upgrade from the S20 to the S25 now? And why not wait until the S26 goes live next year? Let's break it down.

Where the Galaxy S20 still has advantages

Okay, so let's get this out of the way. On paper, at least, the Galaxy S20 has a couple of advantages over the newer S25. But in practice, they're not that great anymore.

  • A higher resolution 3200 x 1440 display. The Galaxy S25 has 2340 x 1080 pixels.
  • A microSD card slot. The Galaxy S25 doesn't have expandable storage.

In reality, the S20 doesn't support 120Hz at QHD resolution, which makes the higher resolution a little useless. Besides, the S25's display is miles ahead in terms of other technologies. But we'll touch on that later.

As for expandable storage, sure, it can be useful for storing photos and videos. But you must keep in mind that modern devices don't support installing games on microSD cards, even if they have expandable storage.

Plus, the Galaxy S25 has much faster UFS 4.0 storage, which can help app loading times, file transfers, multitasking and more.

The Galaxy S25 is a fantastic upgrade

Apart from those two aspects mentioned above, the Galaxy S25 is better than the S20 in virtually every other way. That's objectively true.

The Galaxy S20, as great as it was in 2020, also had some issues, even at launch. For one, it was powered by the Exynos 990 outside the USA.

That was the last Exynos chip to feature an in-house Mongoose CPU core. And sadly, it is considered one of Samsung's worst chips. There's a reason why Samsung stopped making in-house cores after that.

Of course, if you have the USA Galaxy S20 version rather than the global one, your phone is powered by the Snapdragon 865, which was by far the better chip.

But back to the Galaxy S25, if performance is what you crave, there's no contest between the S20 and the S25. If you will replace your S20 with the newer model, you will notice massive improvements right away. The UI is smoother, games run better, apps load faster, and so on.

Plus, you don't have to worry about an Exynos chip. The Galaxy S25 has the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip globally.

Apart from insanely higher performance levels, some of the Galaxy S25's other standout features include:

  • Much better build quality featuring superior materials like Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and an Armor Aluminum 2 frame.
  • A much brighter and better display. It has 2600 nits (vs 1200) and an LTPO backplane. You can use full-screen Always On Display.
  • 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage options.
  • Faster UFS 4.0 storage.
  • 12GB of RAM (up from 8GB) minimum. This helps multitasking and app switching.
  • Better connectivity features, from Wi-Fi 7 to Bluetooth 5.4.
  • Better speakers.
  • A more powerful, higher-resolution main camera and better photo-video capabilities all around.
  • Access to the latest One UI version and the Galaxy AI suite.
  • Support for seven Android OS upgrades.

Galaxy AI now supports more languages

Should you upgrade now? Or should you wait for the S26?

With the Galaxy S26 just around the corner, it may seem logical to use your Galaxy S20 for a couple more months and upgrade next year.

However, if you don't want to spend top dollar, upgrading to the Galaxy S25 now makes more sense.

Black Friday deals are now live in markets like the UK and the USA. And chances of the Galaxy S26 launching for an equal or better price next year are slim to none.

Right now, the Galaxy S25 in the USA is available for $674, but you can save another $75 if you trade in your Galaxy S20.

And in the UK, you can save £200 through a Black Friday deal and save an extra £100 when you trade in your S20.

This means that, in theory, you could grab the Galaxy S25 for only £499. There's no way the Galaxy S26 will offer this kind of value early next year.

All these things considered, it might be time to leave your Galaxy S20 behind and start enjoying all the qualities that newer Samsung phones bring.

Sooner or later, you'll have to do it, and now seems like one of the better times, especially if you can find a good discount on a newer device.
