Text message highlight feature?

Not sure how to explain this, but when i'm typing it highlights the word, and i have to wait a sec before it accepts the word, so if i type too fast and then hit space, it erases the whole word. Any idea how to take that off as well? (Hope that makes sense) Thanks for any help
