external hard drive format

mmk so at college were using macs, well i use windows.... i have an external hard drive. in order to read on both i need to format it to fat32... when i try to format it to fat32 in dos. it goes through then says that partition is to big to do or whatever... maybe one of you guys can help me get my external drive to fat32?

try right clicking the drive in MY coomputer and choose format there. !!

well to start off how big is your external your trying to format? Some operating systems only recognize up to a certain size.. If you continue to get the message split the external into 2 drives through dos or from windows install screen..then you can split them to fat32.

You can always format the partition if you have the Windows XP/Vista recovery disk!

it only gives the option for ntfs, ur are talking about using drive manager right? which is right clicking on my computer> manage > then going to drive manager.

and its a 500 gb external, kaos how would i go about what u said with the parted partition or whatever

get your hands on a xp disc... going to it as you were setting up a system first time...select that drive it will give you a option to set size..... set the size smaller may have to do more then 2 drives on it...but it will split the drive...as jew said the recovery disc...but vista is missing this feature on its disc..so you need a xp to do it... just erase the drive split it and format to fat32 ... all will be well........

if you have access to an xp computer than yeah you will be able to do that....

or google around for a app that lets you messs with the drives...i know symantec and many others have apps that will let you do what you want!

so u want to partition a hd w/o the disk? or xp disc? u can use partition magic or Gparted i use rec. GParted i use that for customers and its bootable and easy to use.

ive got symantec partition magic downloading now itll be installed in about 5 minutes ill take and up it on here once done ^_^

got it split partitioned ^_^ ty menz and heres teh program will also throw it in program section with its own post
