How to Jailbreak Your iPhone/iTouch on OS 3.0 Using RedSn0w (Windows)

These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone and iTouch (All Generations for both) on the 3.0 iPhone firmware using RedSn0w for Windows.


This tutorial can be used to jailbreak before applying the UltraSn0w unlock. UltraSn0w is not released yet. It will be soon. Meaning, if you require the unlock immediately then you should wait to jailbreak until UltraSn0w is released.

This video is for the iPhone, but it is almost the exact process for the other devices so watch for clarity

redsn0w is an easy to use, multi-platform, multi-device jailbreaking and unlocking tool for the iPhone 2G (original iPhone), the iPhone 3G (but not the 3GS) and also the iPod touch (first and second generation). Currently it is available for Windows and Mac OS X (there are some issues using redsn0w with OS X PPC, please use an Intel Mac until we have this problem resolved).

REDSN0W PROVIDES SIMILAR FUNCTIONALITY TO QUICKPWN.

If you want to build custom firmware files with more flexibility it is suggested that you use PwnageTool on Mac OS X.

1. GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use redsn0w right now. Ultrasn0w (the 3G carrier unlock) is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be released via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 carrier unlock works with this redsn0w release.

2. Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you will be able to get it via Cydia or Icy).

3. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.

4. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.

5. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the latest version of redsn0w.

6. This app is suitable for the recent 3.0 release

7. redsn0w will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.

8. redsn0w WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch, iPod touch 2G and the iPhone 3G (not the iPhone 3GS).

To use redsn0w simply upgrade the device in iTunes to firmware version 3.0 and run redsn0w to activate and jailbreak the device (and if you are using an original iPhone 2G, it will unlock it too!)

Just so you know...

1. for the iphone 3g all you need is the ipsw latest 3.0 firmware for redsn0w.

2. for the iphone 2g you will need 3 things since it will be able to be carrier unlocked and those things are listed below (the bootloader can be found by searching google, but I have also included those files in a download on bottom of thread as well as the latest iTouch 3.0 firmware updates because they cost to update, I have not included the iPhone 3.0 update because it is free to update for iPhone through itunes whereas it costs $9.95 for each update for iTouch)

3. for both generations of the iTouch all you will need is the firmware like the iPhone 3G only needed was the firmware.

PC TRAIL for iPhones!

For the iPhone 2G and 3G, once you download and update your device you will be able to find the firmware on pc by following this pc trail below...

go to my computer>pc hardrive>user>"username" whatever that may be for you>appdata>roaming>apple computer>itunes>iphone software updates> and once you get to this folder you will find the latest firmware you downloaded as well as previous device firmware updates you have downloaded from itunes

I say DO NOT install Cydia and Icy together as they do not go well!
So jailbreaking on redsn0w 0.72,Cydia Does not know what version it is using.
This is the crime of a corrupted var/lib/dkpg file.
GOLDEN RULE: Install Cydia,NOT Cydia AND Icy. You can install icy via cydia by doing a search for it within cydia.
The Dev Team are trying to fix this in Redsn0w 0.8.

you can only use this tool for the iphones...I will post a thread for the ipod touches later...and if you downloaded new firmware on itunes already then you have already the latest firmware ipsw on pc already...if you need help finding it, then follow this pc trail below...

icem/\n, I just don't know what to do. I have unlocked, hacked, cracked, flashed, you name it with my touch pro. I just don't fully understand how to hack this darn iphone. The main thing I can't figure out is how to get the ISPW file. I have tried several different ones of the internet but they all give me the following error when I try to do the restore

"The Iphone could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible"

any help on where to find a good one would be appreciated.

Well I did not include a link to the iPhone OS software in the thread because, as I stated, the firmware(ipsw) for the iphone can be downloaded directly through itunes...when you click on the update button of itunes for software upgrades it will look for itunes software updates and if you have not already upgraded to 3.0 then it will ask you whether you would like to install and download the 3.0 firmware...after you finish all that...and updated your device that firmware for 3.0 was downloaded to ur pc or mac right...yes indeed thats right, and you can track that file down that you will need for the redsn0w program by following the pc trail option for iphones that I have in original thread...so just update software through itunes...and before you do that make sure your roommate is using AT&T because if he/she needs their iphone carrier unlocked for another carrier like T-mobile (which is separate from jailbreaking) than you should not use itunes to update device

ok i ave went out and got an 8g ipod touch cause weesjie games, i got the official 3.0 firmware update but when i run the redsnow there is no firmware to apply it to..followed icemans direction regarding my computer, users,etc and when i go to apple update software its not there, i have went to ipod and itunes to no avail, i have spent the last few hours searching trying to find the firmware on my comp and even searched my computer several times to no avail..i have a 2nd generation...does anyone have any advice, i hate asking but i have searched with everything i could possobly think of....

naw....don't worry the 3.0.1 firmware can be jailbroken....but there is a trick to it...you see nothign was changed in the device outside of the messaging application for the iphone with the 3.0.1 update....that update only concerned a sms security issue and did not upgrade the baseband or mess with anything else...so once you have upgrade your itouch/iphone through itunes and proceed to use redsn0w...when you get to the point where it asks you to enter choose the firmware you are jailbreaking...just select the ipsw file for the older 3.0 firmware and it will allow you to jailbreak your iphone 3.0.1 firmware since they are identical to each other with baseband.

i fubar my ipod touch and spent several hours trying to fix to no avail so i went to restore settings thru itunes and it would only do it by allowing me to up date to 3.1.1 software..does anyone know if i can use the same program to jail break this...i was disappointed to cause i had already jail broke it and what not but now i know how to do it and i didnt loose any apps or anything.....

im not sure about the ipod touch but on the iphone 3.1 firmware, u cant jailbreak b/c its not out yet...

i know that you can get it jailbroke even on the new software, you may have to wait for iceman to respond, remember him talking about that not too long ago, maby even in this thread.

i read the tthread but didnt see it, i did do some searching on a post in this thread about 3.0.1 firmware and it looks like broski is right there is an update for it to be broken yet but they are working on it, i found out i could go back on the firmware but i am just going to wait for the update...thanks dash and broski for the response..............

well if ur on 3.0.1 then yes u can jailbreak, but for 3.1,not yet.

Is there anyway to get the new redsnow without using a torrent? I do most my downloading at work sense my gf doesn't like me downloading thigns to her computer sense its the only one hooked up to the internet. And im sure my boss even though she is pretty cool wouldnt like having it on the work computer. I just want to get this set up so when I get my Itouch 2nd gen on monday I can get errr broken and load the thing full of games.

dont put the 3.1 firmware on it yet, 3.0.1 is okay, but 3.1 is not. they are still working on jailbreak for that....

thats why I just downloaded the update already and when I do the update thing on itunes im going to cancle then upgrade with the one I downloaded :D so it should be 3.0 when its all said and done plus i dont feel like paying for the update. Free is good for me.

i jut got the iphone 3gs today from att it came with the 3.1 firmware already on it not the 3.1.2 it just says 3.1 is there a jailbrake for that

I don't know how true it is, but i'm hearing that the only firmware for 3.1 and above is either custom firmware for the 3g or you have to have a mac for it to work.

you can downgrade, but you still wont be able to unlock it......... some people say is possible to unlock 3.1 software, but i still havent seen it done.....
