ARTICLE: Verizon: Nope, the Droid won't strain our 3G network
Aiming to avoid the capacity issues that have strained AT&T's 3G network with the launch of each iPhone revision, Verizon Wireless is welcoming the Motorola Droid and the accompanying wave of data traffic with open arms. Not only is the nation's largest wireless carrier preparing their biggest advertising campaign to date, but Verizon representatives expressed confidence that the network would be more than capable of running the massive increase in data users. “We’re anticipating the Droid will be a blockbuster, but we’re not adding any new backhaul or new EV-DO carriers for the launch. We’re not anticipating the network will take a hit on this," said Arvin Singh, Director of Data Sales for the Illinois-Wisconsin region for Verizon Wireless. While AT&T continues to work on bringing the faster 7.2 Mbps HSPA standard to capacity-strained cities, the current configuration of HSPA and EV-DO Rev. A in the United States does give Verizon Wireless an efficiency advantage in regards to total cell site capacity. Despite the fact that a near-identical issue has occured in the past few years at the nation's second largest wireless carrier, Verizon claims to have prepared for such traffic increases for quite some time. Thanks to the partnership with Verizon and Google, the Motorola Droid is coming pre-loaded with numerous Google applications, and will offer the Android market at launch. What's more, with support for Google Voice and Google Maps Navigation, Verizon appears to be shifting from their once staunch policies to more open-ended alternatives. The Droid will launch on November 6th for $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and new two-year customer agreement. Source: TelephonyOnline Read More From Source |
