[NEWS] Kids can make payments using Google Wallet via Family Link

Kids in the US can now use Google Wallet on their Galaxy (or other Android) phones to make tap-to-pay payments. This feature will be available to those with a Family Link (Google's feature to manage family members) account. It was earlier available only on the Fitbit Ace LTE, a Google smartwatch made for kids.

Google Wallet will soon be available to kids using Galaxy phones

Google recently announced (via 9To5Google) that kids in the USA (and some other countries) using supervised Android phones can use the Google Wallet app to make tap-to-pay payments.

They won't be able to make online payments via Google Pay. This feature will work for accounts supervised by parents using the Family Link app.

Payments can be made using credit cards and debit cards. To make NFC payments, kids must enter their biometrics (face or fingerprint), password, or PIN. Google Wallet will also support event tickets and gift cards. Private passes like health cards and ID cards aren't supported yet.

If you plan to use this feature to let your kids use Google Wallet for NFC payments, you will have to approve every card added to their phones. The Family Link app on your phone will allow you to check their transaction history, and you can even remotely remove cards added to their phones.

Google says that this feature has been built with privacy and security in mind. The infrastructure for this feature was developed before the Fitbit Ace LTE smartwatch was launched earlier this year.

Samsung Wallet needs to bring a similar feature for kids

Samsung hasn't released a similar feature for Samsung Wallet yet. Hopefully, with One UI 7.0's new Parental Control feature, the South Korean firm will enable kids to make NFC or QR code payments with their Galaxy phones using the Samsung Wallet app.
