Rss Feed How Samsung is making wireless charging faster for everyone

Samsung was among the first few Android smartphone brands to add wireless charging to high-end devices. After increasing the wireless charging speed to 15W, it didn't do much to improve it further.

The company is now trying to make wireless charging faster for everyone by joining the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) and getting involved in developing Qi 2.2.

Samsung's PMIC chip, S2MIW06, is future-proof for up to 50W fast wireless charging

System LSI, Samsung's business division that develops semiconductor chips and sensors, has announced a new power management integrated chip (PMIC). It is called the S2MIW06, and it manages wireless charging. This chip allows for much faster charging at up to 50W in receiver mode.

It supports all Qi extensions, including Baseline Power Profile (BPP), Extended Power Profile (EPP), and Magnetic Power Profile (MPP).

BPP supports up to 5W of wireless charging, while EPP takes it up a notch to increase wireless charging up to 15W. EPP is used in most high-end Galaxy phones released over the past few years.

MPP is required for the Qi2 badge (which is separate from Qi2 Ready) and supports up to 25W wireless charging. MPP brings with it a magnetic alignment mechanism, allowing the phone to align perfectly with the wireless charger using strong magnets. This technology was developed by Apple, which then donated it to the WPC.

Samsung says the S2MIW06 chip has been tested extensively to ensure compatibility with hundreds of Qi-certified wireless chargers/charging pads. Moreover, it has also been tested with hundreds of uncertified charging pads. It offers stable wireless charging on a wide variety of chargers.

In transmission mode, the company's new PMIC supports wireless power sharing. This is the same feature that allows Samsung's Galaxy phones to wireless charge other devices, such as smartwatches, wireless earbud cases, and even other phones.

Samsung is co-developing Qi v2.2 with other brands

The South Korean firm says the latest version of Qi 2.2, which the WPC recently mentioned. Similar to Google, System LSI is actively working on the implementation of Qi v2.2. So, future Samsung devices could feature Qi v2.2 for faster wireless charging.

It was recently revealed that Samsung will sell first-party cases with the ‘Qi2 Ready' badge for the Galaxy S25 series. This likely means that the phones might not have the magnets required for the MPP profile, and the cases might help the phone with magnetic alignment.

Hopefully, future Samsung phones will have full Qi v2.2 implementation for 25W or even 50W fast wireless charging. In any case, it is great to know that Samsung is working with the WPC for the Qi v2.2 system and is thinking of bringing faster wireless charging to the entire ecosystem.
