Samsung just got hit with a nearly $200 million expense in the United State

Samsung Electronics is fighting several patent infringement battles, some it has initiated while others it's defending. There's been a verdict in one of those legal battles that the company was fighting against Pictiva Displays.



Pictiva Displays had alleged that Samsung was infringing on two of its US patents relating to OLED technology. A jury in Texas has found in favor of Pictiva, hitting Samsung with $191.4 million in damages.



Samsung intends to appeal the verdict



The lawsuit against Samsung was filed back in 2023. Pictiva had alleged that many of Samsung's Galaxy smartphones, wearables, TVs, computers, and other devices infringed on the patents for improving OLED displays. Samsung had denied this was the case and argued that the patents were invalid.



The jury in a Texas federal court was convinced by Pictiva that many Samsung devices violate its patented technology for enhancing the brightness, resolution, and power efficiency of OLED displays. The company's managing director Angela Quinlan said that this verdict “validates the strength” of the company's intellectual property.



Samsung is understandably not happy with the verdict. The company has confirmed that it intends to appeal the verdict related to these two patents. It added that a petition has already been filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office to invalidate the relevant Pictiva patents.



This is the second large award against Samsung in recent months. A jury had hit Samsung with nearly $445.5 million in damages for infringing on Collision Communications patnets on 4G, 5G, and Wi-Fi standards.
