Was the Galaxy S22 really the first Samsung phone with symmetrical bezels?

Symmetrical screen bezels are a mark of a premium phone, but which Samsung Galaxy smartphone was the first to unlock this design characteristic?



It's fair to say that, if you own the Galaxy S22 or the Galaxy S22+, you're holding the answer in your hands. Even so, Samsung's history with equal screen bezels isn't quite straightforward.



Was the Galaxy S22 really the first?



The fun thing about this question is that there's not one correct answer but several. And here's why.



Let's take a look at the entire Samsung phone landscape, including foldable phones. Technically speaking, the original Galaxy Z Flip from 2020 was the first Samsung smartphone with symmetrical bezels.



But that doesn't seem like a fair deal. The Flip's bezels are substantial. And due to the different display technology, its thick bezels even cover the screen itself around the edges. The bezels protrude like a frame rather than hiding behind the glass like traditional bezels do.



Likewise, the Galaxy Z Fold 2's foldable screen was surrounded and partly covered by symmetrical bezels on all four sides.










Having said that, it's reasonable to distinguish between foldable and rigid phones. The original Flip and the Fold 2 were the first in their category, but it seems unfair to bunch them together with non-foldable handsets.



In the latter category, the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ were truly the first phones in Samsung's portfolio to introduce symmetrical screen bezels. Well, as long as we can ignore a few microns in the lower bezel. And it's probably fair to do so. The difference is negligible. Quite literally microns.

Even so, the Galaxy S22 Ultra was not the first Ultra to have symmetrical screen bezels. It took Samsung's Ultra phones two more years, until the Galaxy S24 Ultra went on sale, to claim this premium design characteristic for themselves.



In that sense, the base and Plus models were ahead of the curve. And for all intents and purposes, the Galaxy S22 was the first Samsung phone, or at least the first rigid phone, to boast equally sized bezels.



That's another design achievement, aside from its compactness, that makes the Galaxy S22 a bit more special than its predecessors from the turn of the decade. History will, and should, remember the Galaxy S22 despite the ticking clock on firmware support.
