Overview: Supergirl is a fictional character, a DC Comics superhero created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino as part of Superman mythos in the late 1950s. Due to a somewhat disjointed continuity, several different versions of Supergirl have appeared in comic books throughout the years. However, the most well-known incarnation is Kara Zor-El, Supermans cousin, also sent to Earth when their home planet Krypton was destroyed. Like her cousin, Kara can fly and possesses superhuman strength and abilities.
She first appeared in Superman #123 (1958) and was created by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino as a counterpart to Superman. (Binder also created Mary Marvel and Miss America, counterparts to Captain Marvel and Captain America.)
The 1985 miniseries Crisis on Infinite Earths featured Supergirl's heroic death and rebooted DC Comics' continuity. Superman was now the sole survivor of Krypton's destruction. There followed a 20-year stint in which Supergirl had different origins and she wasn't Superman's cousin.
In 2004 a post-Crisis version of Kara Zor-El was re-introduced into modern continuity.
Variations of Kara Zor-El have appeared in other media. In 1984, Helen Slater starred in Supergirl, a highly anticipated film which was part of the Superman film franchise. Kara also appeared in Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited.
