[11-01-05] Nintendo to Shy Away From Revolution Specs?
Nintendo to Shy Away From Revolution Specs?
Leo Chan - Tuesday, November 1st, 2005 | 11:17AM (PST) Console specs "largely irrelevant" in the next generation of console wars In light of Nintendo making it clear this past E3 that their Revolution console will not be as powerful in terms of raw "horsepower" compared its competitors, the company may not even bother releasing the official technical specifications for the upcoming console to the press this time around. Nintendo Europe's senior marketing director Jim Merrick, whom you may recall as the same Merrick quoted as revealing a few other Revolution details, explains in an interview with Dutch magazine [N]Gamer: "Regarding the specifications, we will probably never 'release' this information as we feel that it is largely irrelevant. While some of our competitors enjoy comparing specifications, it has little or nothing to do with how satisfied the consumers will be with the system and the games once they are released. I know people are hungry for information on Revolution and we respect and appreciate that, but we don't want to contribute to the cloud of meaningless information that surrounds the next generation systems." I sympathize somewhat with Nintendo's point of view, since I do believe it is difficult for the average gamer to translate specs into actual game experiences. Nintendo seems keen on having players see for themselves as well, as the company is not planning on revealing any Revolution gameplay footage until games actually using the new-fangled controller are ready. On the other hand, more skeptical gamers will see this as a sign that Nintendo would rather not have the Revolution compared to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 solely on terms of system specs. Nintendo might look like the odd one out by keeping mum whilst both Microsoft and Sony push tech "transparency", but would they be as quiet if the Revolution was more powerful than rumors suggested? |
