Transferring 3rd Party Applications To A New Device

Many of us will go through more than 1 Blackberry (How many people were there here that went out and upgraded to the 8700 the first week it came out? ;) )

This brings up a good point when transferring 3rd Party Applications that are on your current device that you wish to transfer onto your device.

This probably won't be an issue with free 3rd Party Applications (Google Maps, Ramble IM, Pico News, Sona Mobile Player, etc).

However, with many paid applications (eOffice, Translator+, IM+, etc) this could pose a problem.

Whenever purchasing a 3rd Party Application, my advice is to contact the developer beforehand to see if it is possible to transfer the application to a new device in the event that you upgrade.

Many programs are registered to the PIN number of the device they were initially purchased on, therefore upgrading can open the possibility of not being able to use previously purchased 3rd Party Applications onto your new device.

However, if you contact the developer beforehand and simply ask them if it is possible to transfer to a new device or inform them beforehand that you will eventually be upgrading devices, you will have a better chance for them to log your information into your files. I can't promise this, nor can I speak for developers, however, I would assume that there is some possible way that once you upgrade devices, you can simply send them your new PIN number along with the old PIN number, and they can activate the key on the new device and unactivate it on the previous device.

This will also bring up a new point when purchasing and selling devices. When purchasing a new device, I would recommend to ask the seller what all 3rd Party Applications (Paid or free) are included on the device itself.

Someone may be asking $600 for a used/locked 8700 on T-Mobile, however they may have $400 worth of 3rd Party Applications pre-installed on the device that are included in the purchase price.

Just something to consider when you are upgrading/buying/selling a Blackberry device.
